A Hoquiam teenager is in critical condition after a vehicle she was a passenger in crashed into a pole in an early Sunday morning accident. The 19 year old driver admitted that alcohol played a role in the crash.

The driver of the car told officers that she had been drinking and that she was traveling around 55 to 60 miles per hour just prior to the collision. She said she lost control of the car on the wet street just prior to striking the pole.

The 17 year old driver was booked into the Grays Harbor County Juvenile Detention Facility for Driving While Under the Influence of Alcohol and Vehicular Assault.

The driver of the car is not only subject to criminal liability for her drunk driving, but also civil liability for the injuries she caused. Violation of a statute is "strong evidence" of negligence and can be used to help the injured party recover the damages suffered.
