Unfortunately, a significant number of accidents are caused by drivers that leave the scene of an accident prematurely.

This was the case in an accident earlier this month on the Mount Baker Highway. A vehicle pulled out of the Nooksack Casino parking lot directly in front of an eastbound Geo Metro. The Metro crossed the center line to avoid a collision and collided with a westbound Mazda.

The driver of the vehicle that had pulled out of the casino parking lot, causing the accident, stayed for approximately 30 seconds and then left the scene of the accident.

The drivers of the other two involved vehicles were seriously injured and transported to a nearby hospital.

The term "phantom driver" appears in most UIM policies. It refers to drivers who cause an accident but don't stop to provide their information. Insurers treat Phantom Drivers as uninsured for purposes of UIM coverage. However, there is a significant prerequisite: the injured insured must report the accident to police right away (usually within anywhere from 24 to 72 hours).
