The Seattle Time summed it up as follows:

From her apartment on Locust Way north of Kenmore to Bastyr University is barely five miles, and Autumn Sansom had made the ride on her bicycle nearly every day since she enrolled at the school in 2005. On Friday, the ride turned to tragedy, when Sansom, 28, was fatally injured in a collision with a pickup in the 15000 block of Juanita Drive Northeast at about 5:15 p.m. as she was riding home from classes.

My partner rides his bike to the office every day. I ride when it's not raining (and I'm not in a hurry). We're both keenly aware of the hazards posed to bicycle commuters.

It's unbelieveably sad that inattention could blot out such a promising life. While claims can be brought on behalf of Ms. Sansom's estate, her parents--under current Washington wrongful death law--cannot recover for the loss of the parent-child relationship which they no doubt held very dear.
