On Saturday, November 12, 2005 a deer in the road caused a collision between a Jeep Cherokee and a small, four-door Ford on State Route 522 near Monroe. The driver of the Jeep swerved to avoid the deer and crossed the center line, hitting the Ford head on. In total, there were nine people involved in the accident, five in the Ford and four in the Jeep.

A 79 year old grandmother named Marjorie Scharf was killed in the car accident and two passengers were airlifted to Harborview Medical Center for emergency treatment. The first passenger, a 13-year old girl, was in serious condition on Sunday. The condition of the other passenger, a woman in her fifties, was unknown. The remaining six passengers all sustained less severe injuries.
