Since 1999, over 40 people have died in 33 car accidents on U.S. 2. Of those accidents, 11 were head-on collisions. Despite a state gasoline tax, U.S. 2 has not received any funds to make safety improvements, whereas the nearby Highway 9 has received $133 million to rebuild eight intersections. However, the state legislature has allocated $1.3 million to study possible improvements on Highway 2.
