A University of Texas study showed that four in 100 passengers visited shipboard infirmaries. Eighteen percent of those who visited infirmaries had been inured.

In a recent interview, Sally van Boheemen, RN and Director of Holland America Line's Fleet Medical Operations, explained that injuries ranged from sprained ankles to broken hips.

In addition, passengers often need to leave a ship for medical reasons. In 2000, Holland America Line alone had 600 medical disembarkations. If a specially equipped medical helicopter or other aircraft is required the cost can exceed $50,000. This may not be covered under the injured person's health insurance plan.

As the statistics suggest, a lot of passengers are injured on Holland America cruises. If you are injured on a Holland America cruise it's important to take action right away. A written claim must be filed within six months of the accident. A lawsuit must be filed within one year of the accident. And all this must take place in Seattle. It's important to speak with an attorney in Seattle about your claims as soon as possible.
